3 TIPS: FILMING EVENTS

Here are 3 essential tips for filming event videos.

  1. Always plan as much as you can ahead of time.
  2. Interact with people
  3. Be flexible

Planning:

You never know exactly what is going to happen at an event, but you can prepare as much as you can beforehand.

I always try to study the run sheet, think about the structure of the final video and sometimes even go as far as picking the music track I’m going to use in the edit. This helps me to only film the things I’m going to use in the edit and not waste time on other things.

Interacting with people:

Sitting in the back of the room and filming from a distance just isn’t going to cut it. You need to interact with people to truly capture the essence of the event. Getting people to look at the camera, smile or pull faces goes a long way to making your video feel more dynamic.

Be flexible:

Things change all the time at events, whether it’s due to runsheet changes, technical issues or simply running out of time. You need to make the most of what you can capture.

Knowing your camera’s settings like the back of your hand helps you to adapt quickly to changing situations. Check out my video on shutter speed here.

So get out there and start filming!
